We will share the songs and words that we learn in our class here as well as the pictures as we take them. Enjoy!
First week's email to the class:
Introduction My name is Hannah Chung and the Sessak 1 class is for the youngest, mostly 3 year to 4.5 year olds, students at our school. Sessak means sprouts in Korean and it symbolizes that with tender love and care, our kids can grow into anything. This is my 3rd semester teaching this class and before this, I organized a Korean storytime for families with infants and toddlers in San Francisco and then in Denver for a couple of years.
For many of my new students, I am assuming that this will be their first Korean school experience. I am hoping that with the help of our wonderful assistant teachers, this will be a school year that provides our students with a solid introduction to the language and culture of Korea as well as a sound foundation for more advanced classes as they progress. Most importantly, I would like to make sure that the students will have a lot of fun while learning and growing with one another.
Goal After studying in this Sessak class for a year, our students are expected to be able to, first, read (recognize) and write (trace) their names in Korean, and speak simple greetings, introduce themselves, count to 10 in Korean, understand simple instructions in Korean, and recognize sounds of the Korean consonants and vowels.
Schedule
We will usually start our day with some playdough activities while everyone is getting settled in. (9:30-9:50)
A circle time will follow to introduce the new words of the day via songs and books, as well as a few popular Korean children’s songs which will be learned and repeated throughout the semester. (I will create a simple blog with YouTube links so that the students can practice and share these songs with their families at home.) (9:50-10:20)
Then we will do a simple drawing/writing exercise before a 20 minute bathroom & snack break. (10:20-10:45)
After the snack the class will do a simple craft to incorporate the day’s lesson and then will have a time where they get to choose their own activities among Legos, pretend play, puzzles, etc. (11:05-11:30) & (11:30-12:00)
We will wrap up the day with another circle time and clean up.(12:00-12:30)
Parent volunteers I will need a room parent volunteer to help me with the snack as well as the clean up each week. One of the great things about our school is the strong parental involvement and I appreciate the parental support from my class! For week 2 (this Saturday), Eli's family volunteered to prepare the snack for the class. For future dates, please click here and sign up for 1-2 dates per student.
Snack As for the snack, I would highly recommend getting a small bottle of water for each child instead of sugary drinks, and simple crackers such as animal crackers, rice crackers, gold fish etc and/or easy-to-serve fruit such as mandarin oranges, raisins or bananas. I’m hoping to avoid any sugar rush after the snack break. :) Any children with food allergies other than nut allergies should bring their own snacks for their safety, and their parents will be waived from the snack sign up duty.
Attendance We will do roll call around 9:45. Please help your student arrive on time and I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me a heads-up for the expected absence of your student.
Looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
